SEO is essential for growing any local business. If you own or manage a local business, improving your local SEO can help you reach more local customers. As well as gaining more local visibility.

What Is Local SEO?

Local SEO is a technique which makes it quick and easy for potential customers in your local area to find your business online when searching organically.

Many site owners are aware of SEO, but few are aware of the difference between traditional SEO work and the variant of local SEO.

Traditional SEO works by making improvements to your website’s on and off-page elements, so that it shows up when users search for certain keyword phrases.

Local SEO is similar, but is used when users search within a geographic area, or with keyword phrases that reference that location.

Here's an example to make my point clearer for you...

If you do a search for coffee shop right now, the search results will show options that are near you, even though you didn’t specify a location.

Do the same thing later, when at home or perhaps at a bar and the results will be different.

That’s local SEO at work.

You see localised results, with the search engines showing you the most useful options based on where you are.

Most of the time you’ll see what’s known as a map pack. This is made up of three listings on a map of the area, plus ten organic listings.

If your business relies on local customers visiting your bricks-and-mortar premises, you need to incorporate local SEO into your search marketing strategy.

This is because an increasing number of customers use mobile devices to search for specific, nearby businesses on the go.
